OSAKA International Jazz Day April 30th

Photo: Are you ready for International Jazz Day April 30? So many exciting events taking place around the world! Have you told us yet what you'll be doing? Our host city is Osaka, Japan Given its legendary history as Japan’s “#jazz mecca” in the early to mid 1920s, Osaka is an ideal choice to serve as the International Jazz Day Global Host City. Osaka’s major early figures in jazz include composer Ryōichi Hattori and trumpeter Fumio Nanri, nicknamed the “Satchmo of Japan” by Louis Armstrong.

One of Japan's legendary son's Terumasa Hino (日野皓正) will be joining us in Osaka-shi, Osaka, Japan on #JazzDay Born in Tokyo, Hino began playing the trumpet at age 9 and released his first album as a bandleader at age 25. In 1975, he moved to New York and began performing with jazz greats including Jackie McLean, Gil Evans, Horace Silver and Larry Coryell. In the years to follow, Hino released a number of hit albums including City Connection and Double Rainbow. In 1984, he performed at the Los Angeles Olympic Games Art Festival, and five years later he was signed to Blue Note Records. Hino’s first Blue Note release, Bluestruck, was successful in Japan as well as in the U.S. In the 1990s, he formed Terumasa Hino & Asian Jazz All-Stars, which toured North America and Asia. Hino was appointed visiting professor at the Osaka Junior College of Music in 2000. The following year, he received Japan’s Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology Award for Art. Hino’s latest release is Jakkou, which received Japan’s Jazz Disc Award. He continues to perform extensively in Japan and around the world, and is passionate about his charity work and providing guidance to young musicians.Japan’s beautiful Osaka Castle Park will host more than 30 world-renowned performers and an audience of thousands in celebration of the International Jazz Day. Opened in 1931, the park features hundreds of Japan's famous cherry trees and surrounds Osaka Castle, a spectacular example of the Azuchi-Momoyama period. The castle was originally commissioned by General Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1583. It served as a symbol of Toyotomi’s power as he continued the military campaign that would effectively unify Japan, ending nearly 200 years of military conflict and socio-political unrest. Damaged, destroyed, and restored repeatedly through the centuries, the castle has come to represent the elegance and indomitable spirit of both the city of Osaja and Japan.

The 2014 All-Star Global Concert will feature internationally renowned artists including pianists: Toshiko Akiyoshi, Kris Bowers, John Beasley and Herbie Hancock; vocalists Dee Dee Bridgewater, Roberta Gambarini, Lalah Hathaway and Gregory Porter; trumpeters Theo Croker, Roy Hargrove and Terumasa Hino; bassists James Genus, Marcus Miller and Esperanza Spalding; drummer @Terri Terri Lyne Carrington, and percussionists Pete Escovedo and Sheila E..; saxophonists Kenny Garrett, Wayne Shorter and Lew Tabackin; trombonist Steve Turre; guitarists Earl Klugh and John Scofield.
