Analyzing BTS Serendipity Trailer "The Little Prince"

Thoughts, Theory, Explaination?

The intro song to the new mini album simply named "Her"  by K-Pop's sensational boy group BTS dropped last night at midnight titled, "Serendipity".  A.R.M.Y.,  (BTS' devoted fan base) and recently introduced to BTS fans waited eagerly and impatiently for the counter clock on BTS/BigHits website to wind down to 00:00:00 with yet again no idea of what was going to be announced or released. BTS entertainment group has a twisted fascination with keeping fans in utter emotional turmoil and unique to BTS.

BTS is currently presenting the theme "Love Yourself" as the concept of their comeback releasing mini album "Her" on September 18th, 2017. Pre-orders for this new release have sold well over one million copies in the first 6 days in the United States alone as several sources have reported. Now let's get into this. While watching this trailer I started to see a theme of something vaguely familiar and it dawned on me that this was reminiscent of the movie "The Little Prince". I, being the investigative and deep in the trenches pre-debut with my boys had to find why this was so familiar in visuals. Is this a story based on something real? Well of course, it's BTS. So I did the responsible thing, blew off work and watched the movie on Netflix! I was right. Now if there are other theories out there which I know there will be but, this is what I believe.

Serendipity

Jimin is the "Little Prince" who loves his red rose that is unique and unlike any other rose in the universe and she loves him back. The story is about love, youth, yearning, happiness and growing up with emphasis on never forgetting your first love or your youth as you grow older.

The lyrics are tricky as you can interpret many ways. Is Rose singing to Jimin, the cat's feelings towards Jimin, Jimin's feelings for the cat, Jimin's feelings towards Rose or Jimin singing directly to a specific girl or Jimin singing these words to A.R.M.Y.?, which I would like to believe the latter but that's just me bein me.

The trailer has many symbolic attributes that coincide with the book and the movie of 

"The Little Prince" in a modern visual updated interpretation.

The story goes....

Once upon a time there was a little prince who lived on a planet scarcely bigger than himself  on an asteroid (the asteroid was "named" B-612 by people on Earth, but the prince called it "asteroid 325") in need of a friend. He woke up one day to find a unique plant different from all others in the universe. He laid down next to the tiny plant and fell asleep watching the stars who were said to be happy and laughing which made him happy. When he awoke his plant had bloomed, a beautiful red rose. The prince says he nourished the rose and listened to her when she told him to make a screen or glass globe to protect her from the cold wind. Although the prince fell in love with the rose, he also began to feel that she was taking advantage of him, and he resolved to leave the asteroid to explore the rest of the universe. Although the rose finally apologized for her vanity, and the two reconciled, she encouraged him to go ahead with his journey and so he traveled onward. The prince misses his rose and claims that he only needs to look at the millions of stars to be reminded of his rose, since his rose is among one of them.

At the beginning of the trailer symbolic of the prince as he begins his journey and travels through space to earth zooming in on South Korea as seen through his eyes which the contact lenses Jimin is wearing are the same color and pigmentation as the little prince character in the movie.

The color yellow is prominent throughout the trailer. The little prince had curly yellow hair, a yellow scarf and was known as the "Sun King" as he shone so bright and the yellow blanket his warmth, Rose. The color Yellow stands for freshness, happiness, positivity, clarity, energy, optimism, enlightenment, remembrance, intellect, honor, loyalty, and joy.

Now what seems to be hanging is a tiny planet with revolving stars which resembles the little prince's home planet/asteroid  and the book in the side table resembles the real book with more on the floor which could mean it is the Korean series of children's stories or different language versions, Korean, English and Japanese of the same and if so a Japanese MV may be coming. Furthermore the window is the same as in the movie. I cannot see clearly the rest of the items but the tall lamp is reminding me of a previous MV from BTS but can't put my finger on it. The yellow cactus is actually Rose.

The next scene with flowing sheets symbolizes innocence and purity and the happiness of this young boy in love. The following shot goes back to the initial room but in black and white, not color as he sings "the whole world is different than yesterday" feeling Leary. As Jimin reaches for the cactus (Rose) who he has been waiting for her, and called for him again,  he knew if he touched her (responded) he might get pricked by her thorns as her vanity tormented him even though his heart flutters, he is still worried but can't resist her when she sees him and touches him, he becomes her one and only flower.

The prince and Rose loved each other, but they were too young to know how to love, so he ran away to earth but as he mentally is growing up separated from her and misses her, he falls through the universe to find his way back to her yet again. "The distance is jealous" is a metaphor of their happiness. Although young and afraid of love their bond cannot be broken no matter the distance and they are happy as they bloomed together (grew up together, grew in love together dazzingly, with all the aches of maturity) and so in love they are like each others medicine and the only cure for their happiness is in the fact that he loves her and she loves him but they are scared of this love, she knows and he knows, they are of one heart (you are I, I am you).

The prince' journey does not take him back to her yet as he still is contemplating but, the total eclipse (of the heart) was a message from the universe as he is the Sun King (nickname for the prince). As Jimin flicks the little yellow ball (the sun) symbolizing the young prince then switches to the next shot where the  yellow ball is larger (Sun King) as he has grown up now. He shyly and innocently covers his face smiling as time has not stopped his devotion to Rose and the moon represents the universe moving for them to show their love still exists. 

In the next scene the window has grown larger as the subtle breeze billows the curtains in white (innocence) as he is still thinking and is still quite happy  because she loves him and he still loves her although he feels empty as the room suggests and he misses her. The emptiness of feeling lonely without her.

When Jimin uncovers the blanket from his face he is in a galaxy of stars. When he misses Rose he looks to the stars, his medicine (penicillium) to cure his loneliness without her. He believes when he looks at the stars with all of his heart he hears laughing,  and is, and always will be ,with Rose as she is among them. She saves him from his tormented thoughts as she is his angel and his entire world.

 In the story of the little prince there is a fox. For the fox to become your friend you must first tame him which the prince did. In the video it is a calico cat sometimes called chatte d'Espagne (French for '(female) cat of Spain'). Because genetic determination of coat colors in calico cats is linked to the X chromosome, calico's are nearly always female. Furthermore
the calico cat is considered a "lucky cat" in many society's.
The author of the book "The Little Prince" is French by the way.

Jimin sings I am your calico cat here to see you, so he leads you to believe he makes his journey back to her and he just wants her to "love him now, touch him now, just let me love you" as they have been apart for so long and his heart yearns for her, but, he ends up in the same room as the beginning of the video. The calico cat represents Rose and how she tried to tame him but in reality she pushed him away with all of her demands but did not stop the prince from loving her or her loving him. First love you never forget.

Next scene blue rain. In the movie there is a drain spout that has torn off of the house in a rain storm and the little girl falls which has nothing to do with this MV but it has a similarity as Jimin seems to be standing on it then falls.

In the movie this is a time where the little girl's world is shaken up as her neighbor falls ill, her world shatters as she chases the ambulance to the hospital. She wants him to be well and needs to tell him how much she loves him which she has never told him before. In the MV the next scene seems like an earthquake is happening followed by a Tsunami which now Jimins world shatters. Rose dies and he was not there but, he still is smiling. Since the creation of the universe the prince just wanted to love her with no complications; "just let me love you". Feeling the need to see her star he looks through the telescope up at the sky then returns to the empty room as his heart breaks he let's go of the yellow balloon, Rose his first and only love.

The next scene is Jimin staring blanked faced as the stars swirl around him, Rose will always be there in the stars for him although he cannot touch her, he can feel her like a warm blanket which makes him happy and he smiles. He will forever be looking up towards the stars until the day breaks again.
